All The Good wins Caulfield Cup
Powerhouse stable Godolphin claimed its first major Australian race with long shot English raider All The Good saluting in today's $2.5 million Caulfield Cup over 2,400 metres.
The Godolphin stable, which is backed by Sheikh Mohammed and operates out of Dubai and England, has had a number of flops over the past decade in Australia's major Spring races, but snared the toughest staying race on the calendar with $47 chance All The Good.
The six-year-old chestnut, racing for the first time on Southern Hemisphere soil, finished ahead of Australian Derby winner Nom Du Jeu ($27) and longshot Barbaricus ($103), who took up the early pace and was only mown down in the final 200 metres of the race.
Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler ($5.80), who enjoyed the support of the majority of the Caulfield crowd, had the run of the race but could not match it with the stayers down the final straight.
Likewise for pre-race favourite Littorio, who could not stay the trip after being sent out a $4.60 chance following his win in the Turnbull a fortnight ago.
Last year's winner Master O'Reilly, aiming to become the first horse since Rising fast in 1954-55 to win back-to-back Caulfield Cups, was given every chance by jockey Vlad Duric but could not match it with the winners in the final 300 metres.
Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, All The Good tackled the pace-setters around the final bend and emerged at the bottom of the straight four off the rails before coasting up to the lead.
McEvoy, who was suspended for his riding and widely criticised over the past month, said the horse put in a super effort after being caught in a less-than-ideal position early in the race.
"I got caught three deep but I had cover the whole way and for an English horse he travelled really well and picked up nicely there when we turned for home," he said.
"It's such a huge buzz I'm so excited, especially to wear these blue colours.
"I'm really excited and it's such a great thrill to win the Caulfield Cup - it's a fantastic race."
Stable manager Dianna Cooper paid tribute to McEvoy's ride and said Godolphin was thrilled with the win.
"Kerrin gave him a magic ride I'm so proud of him - couldn't have been better," she said.
"We're very, very happy, very proud. I couldn't be happier for the whole team here and back at home in Dubai and in England - it's a great achievement."
"He's a horse who's shown he can stay much further, he's won over 12 furlongs, he's travelled beautifully.
"He's been very relaxed while he's been here and he's settled in very, very well, he's got a great profile, he's got speed, he's got stamina."
