Australia assists Solomon Islands local sports orgs

AUSTRALIA has been supporting sports in Solomon Islands for a very long time.

The Australian High Commission, through the Australian Sports Outreach Program, has supported the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) Physical Education (PE) Syllabus Project.

This was highlighted in a speech by the Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Alison Duncan, at the opening of the CDC PE workshop at King George VI School on Monday.

This is through the purchase and supply of about SBD$60,000 worth of sports equipment to be distributed to ten secondary schools, one in each province.

In total, seven Solomon Islands sporting organisations had received funding for sports projects under the 2007-2008 Australian Sports Outreach Programme (ASOP).

Australia has supported Triathlon, AvuAvu Sports Association, Futsal, Rugby Union Federation, Athletics Association and the West Makira Sports apart from CDC.

Three additional organisations have also received funding for 2008-2009.

In December they will also be supporting To'abaita Authority for Research and Development student volunteers.

This is to organise the North Malaita Christmas Games, as part of the North Malaita School and Community Sports Development Initiative.

“The assistance demonstrates just one way in which Australia works in partnership with the Solomon Islands Government...” said the Deputy Commissioner.
