Murray and Federer set up rematch
A dominant Andy Murray defeated Gael Monfils 6-2 6-2 to move into the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters.
The world number four will now face his US Open final conqueror Roger Federer, who beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 6-3.
Top seed Rafael Nadal saw off Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-4 and will play France's Gilles Simon in the semis.
Murray lost his opening service game against Monfils in a cagey start to the match, but once he had broken to take a 4-2 lead he took complete control.
Monfils could find no answer to his opponent's greater variety and Murray eased to victory in just over an hour.
"I served very badly at the start," admitted Murray.
"But once I got a few more serves in, I only lost one more game until I lost my focus right at the end.
"I started to relax and hit the ball pretty well. It was a really satisfying performance."
Federer was in impressive form as he swept past Del Potro to set up a rematch with Murray.
"I served well and didn't get broken so I'm happy with my game at the moment," said the Swiss. "I did well and chose the right tactics."
Following Federer's straight-sets defeat of Murray in September's US Open final, the head-to-head record stands at 2-2.
"Playing against Federer is always a great challenge," said Murray.
"I've played well against him in the past, apart from at the US Open, which wasn't so good. I'll definitely be much more relaxed tomorrow than in New York.
"To have to play Federer in my first Slam final, is not the best way to go up against him."
Federer will take nothing for granted against Murray having twice been beaten by the Scot.
"I'll have to come with a proper game plan," said Federer. "He played well against Monfils, so I'll have my hands full with him."
Nadal suffered shoulder pain against Richard Gasquet on Thursday and he received treatment just before playing Lopez.
"Right up to the last minute the doctors have been treating me for shoulder pain," said Nadal. "I spent two hours with them before coming out on court."
Simon clinched victory over Ivo Karlovic beating the Croat 7-6 4-6 7-6.
