Rafa Nadal made a confident start to the defence of his Wimbledon title with a clinical 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over American Michael Russell on Monday.

The Spanish top seed lost his serve in the opening set but he quickly broke back and played some inspired tennis against Russell who also contributed to an entertaining match.

Nadal, seeking his third Wimbledon title and 11th grand slam crown, next plays American Ryan Sweeting or Spain's Pablo Andujar.
