Joshana Chinappa claims maiden crown

A new chapter was written in the history of Indian sports as Joshana Chinappa became the first squash player from Indian to win the Women’s International Professional Association (WISPA) championship.

The squash sensation from Chennai, beat Low Lee Wern 11-8 11-5 11-3 to emerge as the first Indian ever to win the WISPA championship ever.

Joshana, granddaughter Field Marshall KM Cariappa overcame Sharon Wee, no.1 seed in the semi-final 11-9 11-9 12-14 11-3 before setting the summit clash with the Championship No 1 Wern.

She has faced many hurdles in the sport, which is yet to get a nod from the International Olympic committee to be recognised in the Olympics. Yet, this squash sensation set a new landmark in the sport by becoming the first Indian ever to win the WISPA title for the country.

“It is different feeling and with the Commonwealth Games in India this victory will give me morale support,” Joshana told

Joshna has been in the field for over 10 years, and has all the national records in her kitty. “I wanted to win this title which has been eluding me for the past four years. I wish Nicole the world No 1 was here,” stated Joshana.
