Pakistan wrap up Windies series

A century from Shivnarine Chanderpaul failed to save the West Indies from a 24-run defeat by Pakistan, a win which wrapped up three-match series.

Set 233 to win, only Ramnaresh Sarwan (45) provided adequate support as Chanderpaul was left stranded on 107.

Misbah-ul-Haq (54) set the platform for Pakistan with the bat, ably assisted by Kamran Akmal (45) and Younus Khan (34).

Pace bowlers Sohail Tanvir (2-32) and Umar Gul (3-32) did the bulk of the damage for Pakistan.

The victory ensured Shoaib Malik's side clinched the three-match series with one match still to play in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

With confidence on a high after a thrilling four-wicket victory in the first one-day international on Wednesday, Pakistan skipper Malik won the toss and elected to bat in at the Sheikh Zayed stadium.

But his side found themselves in deep trouble at 7-2 as both openers fell in quick succession.

Jerome Taylor removed Salman Butt (7) before Daren Powell bowled Khurram Manzoor for a duck in only his second limited overs match.

But Younus and Misbah steadied the innings, putting on 78 for the third wicket before the former became Powell's second victim.

Akmal, Pakistan's six-hitting hero in the final over of the first match, played a more sedate innings, scoring one four in his 54-ball innings.

But late hitting from Shahid Afridi (28) and Sohail Tanvir (26) ensured Pakistan registered a respectable total, although they were dismissed an over short of the 50 as Powell and Taylor collected three wickets each.

The West Indian response began in the worst possible fashion as Tanvir dismissed first-match centurion Chris Gayle and Sewnarine Chattergoon for ducks.

But the Guyanese pair of Sarwan and Chanderpaul put on a 92-run third-wicket stand as the West Indies regrouped.

But Sarwan fell five runs short of a deserved half century, trapped lbw by Afridi with the score on 106-3.

The ex-skipper's dismissal sparked a collapse as Chanderpaul saw Xavier Marshall and Shawn Findlay run out, while Gul took care of wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh.

Spinner Nikita Miller (12) provided brief resistance before he was caught behind off Saeed Ajmal.

And the game was brought to an end when Gul penetrated the defences of Powell and Lionel Baker with seven balls to spare.

"The first two matches proved Pakistan is the stronger team overall," said West Indies coach John Dyson.

"We are giving too many free hits in the bowling. In the batting, we have the style of play the crowds in the Caribbean love, they like to see the ball crushed, but in between you have got to pick up singles, like Pakistan are doing."
