Andrew Symonds in Australia Test return

Australia have recalled all-rounder Andrew Symonds in a 13-man squad for the first Test against New Zealand.

Symonds was sent home from Australia's series against Bangladesh in August for skipping a team meeting to go fishing.

"Andrew has successfully completed the prescribed plan to enable us consider him for selection," said Australia's chief selector Andrew Hilditch.

The all-rounder will play in Australia's Twenty20 challenge match against an All-Star XI on Friday.

Batsman Michael Clarke, who played in the fourth Test against India despite suffering from a virus, has been selected for Test at The Gabba in Brisbane on 20 November, subject to fitness.

Jason Krejza retains his place after taking 12 wickets on debut in Nagpur but fellow-spinner Cameron White misses out.

"Michael contracted a virus during the fourth Test in India and was extremely ill during the match," said Hilditch. "An assessment on his availability will be made in Brisbane."

"Jason Krejza richly deserves to retain his place in the side after such an outstanding debut in Nagpur.

"It will now be a significant challenge for him to adapt back to Australian conditions and continue his development.

"Obviously it will be disappointing for Cameron White to miss selection after playing four Tests in India.

"With our return to Australia however, only one specialist spinner has been named in the squad."

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said Symonds had worked hard to regain his place in the team, having also been omitted from the squad the tour to India.

"I have been in regular contact with Andrew over the last month or so," said Sutherland.

"He has made significant progress during his enforced lay-off and we are happy that he is now available to be selected for Australia again."

Symonds had earlier vowed to improve his behaviour, insisting he would emerge "a better person" after being dropped.

"I'm in a position of responsibility, I can't live irresponsibly," he said in September. "I've realised that and it's probably taken me longer than it should have."

Symonds has previously courted controversy over his behaviour. In 2005 he was left out of a one-day match, also against Bangladesh, having turned up for the game under the influence of alcohol.
